Aberdeen, ID: Achieving Compliance and Accuracy in Lead Service Line Inventory

Background

The City of Aberdeen, Idaho, a small town of 2,088 residents within Bingham County, faced the critical need to develop a compliant inventory of its 806 service lines with the fewest possible unknowns. Like many rural water systems in the U.S., Aberdeen’s water operators work tirelessly to ensure the delivery of clean and safe drinking water despite facing limited resources.

The Challenge

Aberdeen aimed to create an inventory of its public and private service lines to conform to regulatory requirements and ensure the safety of its residents. However, Aberdeen faced significant challenges due to limited data availability. They were working with one piece of asset data—a map from their engineering firm that demonstrated a service line replacement project. Unfortunately, this map did not contain essential information, such as addresses, thus complicating the identification process.

The Project

Aberdeen partnered with 120Water to tackle their lead service line inventory challenges. Leveraging our expertise and resources, we provided comprehensive lead service line inventory services. The 120Water data analysis team was pivotal, successfully identifying addresses and inputting materials for nearly half of Aberdeen's total service lines. They analyzed existing data and streamlined the inventory process. Additionally, the team offered guidance on proper note-taking practices during Aberdeen's verification project, ensuring accuracy and consistency in data collection.

Recognizing the importance of community involvement, Aberdeen implemented various methods to engage residents in the lead service line inventory project. They initiated surveys, contacting residents to gather information about service line materials. This proactive approach yielded nearly 100 responses, significantly contributing to the data collection efforts.

What's Next

Through diligent collaboration and proactive engagement strategies, Aberdeen successfully achieved its objective of establishing a compliant inventory of public and private service lines, satisfying regulatory compliance, and enhancing the safety and well-being of Aberdeen's residents.

Committed to ensuring the integrity of its water infrastructure, and with a significant portion of the service lines identified, Aberdeen is shifting the focus towards continued engagement with residents and stakeholders. The next steps include further data verification efforts via surveys and field verification. By building upon the progress made in this project, Aberdeen aims to safeguard the health and safety of its residents for the long term.
